How to Read a SCAT Test Score?

Children learn and adapt to new lessons at their own pace. You cannot compare one child to another. SCAT test is for gifted children who have 

above-average intelligence and often do not feel challenged by the school curriculum. 

It is conducted by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (JHCTY) and offers many such opportunities to children that enhance their growth curves. Its special programs better their existing skills and prepare them for future challenges. 

What is SCAT?

SCAT stands for School and College Ability Test and is conducted by Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (JHCTY). John Hopkins is a very prestigious university. 

It presents ample learning opportunities for gifted children by identifying special abilities and allowing them to take some of the most well-designed courses at JHCTY. These courses are taught by subject matter experts and the brightest teachers in the country. 

This test comes across as challenging because students are expected to know more than their desired grade level. If a grade 2-3 student wants to take SCAT, they have to prepare for a test designed for grades 5 and 6. This makes the SCAT unique. 

Parts of SCAT

The SCAT test is divided into two sections. The verbal part and the quantitative part. The higher the level, the more difficult it gets. 50 questions from both sections are graded and 5 questions are experimental which doesn’t count in the final score.  

Each part has to be solved in 22 minutes. Although the entire process takes 90 minutes, the test itself can be done in an hour or so plus the students can also take an optional 10-minute break.

Verbal

The verbal test examines the child’s vocabulary and verbal reasoning skills. Also, multiple choice analogies are given which can be quite tricky as it might seem as though a question has more than one correct answer. The child needs to have strong verbal communication, comprehension, and powerful language to pass this test. 

Quantitative 

The quantitative part tests the child’s knowledge of numbers. This part is completely mathematical where the student is given two math quotations and they have to identify which one is greater. The exam is designed to test the student’s mathematical reasoning.  

How is the SCAT Test Scored?

Just like the IAR test, the scoring pattern of SCAT is also unique. Students are asked 50 questions in each section. Thus, a total of 100 questions are asked in SCAT. If someone answers 35 answers out of 50 questions correctly then the score is counted as 35. 

SCAT score is different for students at different levels. It ranges from 400 to 515 (section-wise), depending on which level the student is. For scoring, SCAT has three levels – elementary, intermediate, and advanced. Each level follows its scoring system. For example, at the elementary level, the verbal section ranges from 401 to 471. The quantitative section carries some 412 to 475 marks. 

Since SCAT tests students with concepts from higher grades, the comparison of scores is also made accordingly. SCAT percentile is calculated based on how well a student has done compared to the average children of the respective higher grades. So, the student’s SCAT percentile is based on the average score of the higher grade. But apart from that, SCAT also follows a raw scoring pattern and scaled score.

Raw Score 

As the name suggests, a raw score is the number of correct answers given by the student out of all the questions. So, for example, if a student’s score is 45 in one section, it means that out of 50 questions, he/she has answered 45 correctly. 

Scaled Score 

A scaled score is done after the Raw score is determined. Administers can compare the scores at this point. Scaled scores range from 400 to 514. This is a comparison of a student’s performance with other people at the same level. JHCTY has a limited number of seats, and only the top scorers get placed there. However, everybody gets a certificate of participation. 

SCAT Percentile 

SCAT percentile is the final score conversion. The percentile is used to review academic performance and compare it with other students of higher grades.

The main aim of CTY is to identify gifted children and enroll them in the programs accordingly. This program is used to measure a child’s ability at the school level.

What is a Good SCAT Score? 

There are three different ranges of percentiles that determine a good score for SCAT. These percentiles are 50%, 75%, and 90%. Students are also given different advantages based on these scores. 

50 Percentile 

The SCAT is extremely difficult and a high-level examination. Students with 50% to 75% are given consideration for the gifted programs at their school. They might also be given consideration for talented programs at other institutions and schools. Some schools may also provide some enrichment material to help them as an educational aid. 

75 Percentile 

The 75 percentile provides all the benefits and also requires special instructions in the classrooms. They are also eligible to work with a mentor or a tutor. Since these children are gifted, they are eligible to exempt themselves from the curriculum of their current grade. 

90 Percentile 

Students with a 90 percentile are highly intelligent and gifted, these students are eligible for all the benefits mentioned above. They can also be free to look ahead and follow the curriculum of higher grades. Students with the 90 percentile are also eligible for all the advantages of SCAT at the school’s and CTY levels.
