Fortnite’s New ‘Roguelike’ Game Mode Featuring Jason Statham

Jason Statham is starring in a new thriller movie called Shelter, and Fortnite is collabing with him with a brand new game mode. To promote the movie, Epic Games created a new map and game mode that players can join. It’s supposed to be a Roguelike with up to four players. Your task is to protect a girl named Jessie from several waves of enemies for as long as possible. Here’s all that we know so far based on the game’s recent trailer.

🤔 What is Shelter?

Shelter is a new movie that’s coming out in theatres soon staring Jason Statham. The game mode about the movie makes you play alongside him as you protect a young girl named Jessie. The map also takes place in the same area for the movie along with several enemies that you might be familiar with from other Fortnite custom maps. Statham will be playing Michael Mason. As per most acting roles for the actor, Mason is a retired assassin who’s tasked to protect Jessie after rescuing her from the ocean. Players will be reenacting this same role in the game, as you’ll be exploring the Scottish islands where the movie takes place and where Michael and Jessie are from. That means that if you play this mode before the film’s release, you might be seeing some familiar landmarks from the Fortnite game!

🎮 The Shelter Game Mode

The new Shelter game mode is going for a Roguelike approach to its core gameplay. The trailer doesn’t reveal too much right now, but there’s some good hints to what you’ll get to do. According to the trailer, players will be fighting against waves of enemies that’ll get stronger the longer you play. This is similar to the popular zombie wave games that can be found in a bunch of Fortnite custom maps, but this one promises more replayability to keep people coming back.

The more you play, the more in-game money you earn that you can use for upgrades and weapons. Abilities like for your maximum health and defense can be increased by levels. Eventually, these skills will get very expensive as you play, but there’s a way to remedy that. Weapons can also either be bought or found around the map for higher damage. Some can even be used for melee rather than just straight shooting.

Other skills can also be upgraded, but they hint at an actual ‘Shelter’ feature. The most notable here is the ‘Rest Zone,’ which increases your passive income rather than increases a player’s health by actually resting. The screenshot shown above from the trailer also shows the rates of income you get. This makes the game seem like it has some tycoon elements too by increasing your income and even Loot probabilities. 

Along with increasing her income, you can also upgrade your Loot Rewards and Chest RNG. Doing so will help you get some stronger weapons to fight back against harder enemy waves. However, increasing the game’s Chest RNG will make Chests appear more often around the map. 

♾️ The Rebirth System

As money gets harder to earn as you play, there’s a very important mechanic that helps. The Rebirth System in the game gives you permanent buffs to your abilities, stats, and passive income bonuses. By Rebirthing you’ll be forced to start over, but you’ll be progressing faster thanks to the new buffs. The Rebirth bonuses do depend on how well you progressed in your current run, so you don’t wanna constantly restart to get the most out of it.

But what about your stat upgrades? Do you lose those too when Rebirthing? Unfortunately, yes, you do. You lose all of your money, stat upgrades, and even your weapons. You’ll need to reroll for your old weapons or brand new ones. With the bonuses you get for how fast you get money though, rerolling and upgrading back to where you were will also be faster. The system also keeps players coming back to level themselves up as much as possible.

💥 The Weaponry RNG

There’s also a special roll system for getting weapons. You can still get some special ones through Chests that you find around the map, but upgrades are a different story. When you enter the game, you can find a dog that plans to appear in the movie. This dog is the one in charge of all your weapon upgrades. Here, you’ll be purchasing from a selection of existing weapon types and increasing their stats. By doing so, you’ll be upgrading all weapons of that type that you find from Chests around the map.
